Reading – Leveled Readers
Every week I am a guest on Book Bites for Kids , on Blog Radio produced by The National Writing Center for Children Center.
Host Suzanne Lieurance, a former public school reading teacher, now a children’s book writer and The Working Writers Coach, and I discuss ways parents and teachers can help their children and students increase their reading achievement, and talk about new educational materials available on literacy.
Tune into Blog Radio today, Thursday at 2:00
Today we are talking About Leveled Reader. Short books, usually written by well-know authors and created in series. Usually starting at level “A” and ending at “O”, which are Illustrated, with carefully chosen words.
There are three ways to use Leveled Readers in the classroom:
1 Leveled Story Books – In a small group setting the teachers places students into small groups (usually three groups,), with other children who have similar reading abilities. Each student receives the same book their group receives, and one appropriate to their reading achievement.
2.Multilevel Books – Are written to provide differentiated instruction. Three levels of the same book title are provided to specific students. Students are taught as a whole group, rather than in small groups. Even though students have different versions of the story, every student can still participate in class discussions, comprehension worksheets and short quizzes.
3.Projectable Books – These series of leveled readers integrate technology with reading curriculum. These leveled readers are formatted for digital projectors and smart boards.
Students today are given a variety of way to learn to read. Using leveled readers in the classroom is an excellent learning source for all students, to not only experience achievement, but gain confidence about their reading development.
